CWT Chamber Training's Hair Academy were delighted to be asked to provide hair stylist support to a local musical theatre group for their production of All Shook Up. The Coventry based group has been running since 1972, and attracts many highly talented 7 - 21 year old drama enthusiasts.
The Coventry Youth Operetta Group, commonly known as YOG, performs regularly at the Belgrade theatre and the (newly reopened) Albany theatre.
Our Apprentices thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic opportunity, and recreated a 50s style look for the cast of All Shook Up!
An Exciting Challenge
This important job was a real challenge for us, so we researched the look via various industry leading websites. After practising the techniques in our salon, we soon had our 'teddy boy' quiffs and rolls down to a fine art!
The Apprentices experienced the pressure, creating a French pleat on an actress when you're told she needs to be on stage in just 6 minutes!
A Valuable Learning Experience
CWT Chamber Training's Jayne Powell said:
"Our Apprentices were exposed to working under pressure with strict time scales and unpredicted interruptions when styling the hair."
"Stylists were able to move freely backstage at the theatre communicating with chorus, principles and back stage crew. Direction was given on the hair by the wardrobe mistress."
"The work of a Hairdresser in the theatre and television industry is very different to working in a salon. Different techniques may be required, depending on the style of the production. The stylist works with the Production team and Director in deciding on styles and looks that are appropriate to the production. If it is a period production, the style and type of hairdressing of the time must be researched. As we did for All Shook Up."
