National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

National vocational qualifications (NVQs) are an integral part of modern career development giving employees recognition of their ability to perform the range of skills necessary to be effective in their job. Training is targeted on actual work – focusing resources on activities which bring benefit to individuals and companies alike.

There are 3 good reasons for gaining an NVQ:

  • To show that you have up to date skills that employers value
  • To assist your career development
  • As a lead to higher qualifications
As NVQs are work-related, competence-based qualifications, they reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively and demonstrate competence. CWT offers

Within reason, NVQs do not have to be completed in a specified amount of time. They can be taken by anyone working with an employer on a full-time, part-time or voluntary basis. There are no age limits and no special entry requirements other than the need to be working in the area of your chosen NVQ, for example if you would like to undertake an NVQ in hairdressing then you will need to be working in a hairdressing salon. NVQs are available at 5 levels, progressing from junior levels at level 1 to senior management at level 5. The choice of level depends upon your job role and responsibility.

How are NVQs achieved?

NVQs are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment is normally through on-the-job observation and questioning. You will produce evidence to prove that you have the competence to meet the NVQ standards. You will be appointed an Assessor who will sign off units when you prove that you have met the standard. The Assessor will test your knowledge, understanding and work-based performance to make sure that you can demonstrate competence in the workplace.

When you start an NVQ, CWT will help you to identify the correct NVQ and level, identify what you already do, analyse what you need to learn and agree on assessment routes.

What support will be provided to gain my qualification?

  • Assigned personal Assessor to provide one -to-one support
  • Regular work place visits, arranged at a pace and time to suit your needs
  • Individually planned learning and assessment which account for your circumstances
  • Access to an on-line communication hub providing instant contact with your Assessor
